RAIN WASHES AWAY HADDOCK'S HOPES AT OPENER
by Bambee Haddock
The 2008 IHRA Nitro Funny Car World Champion had high hopes for his Dodge Stratus nitro funny car going into today’s two qualifying sessions at the season opening NHRA Kragen O’Reilly Winternationals in Pomona, CA. But after just one session where mechanical issues forced an aborted run, rain ended Terry Haddock’s hopes of making Sunday’s show. While Haddock’s second car, the Andy Carter driven top fuel dragster sits solidly in the field at number 13.
“We’re a small, low budget team out here with no current major sponsor,” said Haddock. “We weren’t able to go out and test before the season started like the high dollar teams, so we are still working the winter cobwebs out of the car. There were a lot of rule changes implemented over the off season and it will take a run or two to get everything in order. If we hadn’t lost three of our qualifying runs, this would be a different story.”
Andy Carter, in the Lucas Oil UK dragster, owned and tuned by Terry Haddock, made the show in the number 13 qualifying spot with a 4.020 second pass. Carter will face number 4 qualifier Brandon Berstein first round on Sunday.
Terry Haddock and his nitro funny car team plan on running the Arizona NHRA Nationals in Phoenix in two weeks. The team also plans on running a dozen or so NHRA events in conjunction with running the top fuel dragster on the IHRA side for the 2009 season.
